“And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” (Matthew 13:10)
God speaks to us in many ways…through prayer, through His word and even through other people. The God of all Creation – the Maker of Heaven and Earth – can speak to each one of us in very personal and intimate ways, directly into the depths of our heart:
…And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. (Psalm 51:6)
Jesus also spoke through the parables recorded in the Bible, which certainly apply to us today. Parables are stories or illustrations that draw parallels to truth, teaching through relatable comparisons.
Many people listened intently to what Jesus told them – not always understanding. Then, some departed and went on their own way – like a pilot cancelling a flight plan and “requesting a frequency change”…or departing the traffic pattern to “resume own navigation…”
Others – inclined their ear – eager to understand what Jesus was saying and, indeed, to apply the greater lesson within the parable. Like an air traffic controller issuing instructions we comply under His authority, “I have your clearance, advise ready to copy…”
Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge… (Proverbs 22:17)
One of the ways God speaks to me is through my flying – when grounded in the truth found only in His word. Indeed, proper and foundational instruction is based on certainties; that is, biblical certainties from the word of God.
Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You. (Psalm 119:11)
Often, He will bring to mind a past flying experience or use some aeronautical knowledge stored up from study, giving me a unique illustration of His character, His attributes and His ways. In turn, this causes me to dig deeper, to seek Him though His word and prayer, and come to know Him more intimately. It’s pretty awesome! Each “parable” allows me to relate to Him in new ways as I seek to understand His will for my life – my own personal parable for this once-lost aviator.
As to why He spoke in parables, Jesus told his disciples… “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven…” (Matthew 13:11)
To which I say, “Roger that!”
Or, more appropriately, “Roger – Wilco!” In other words, I have received, understand and will comply with your instructions (as per the Pilot-Controller Glossary).
There are all sorts of hazards, obstructions and risks when a pilot operates outside of, or contrary to, the instructions of Air Traffic Control. Similarly, living outside of God’s word, His will, and His specific plan for our lives leads to pain, suffering and destruction. I’ve logged a lot of time doing the latter and, trust me, it is a turbulent flight to nowhere. Change course immediately, fix your eyes upon Him – and fly direct!
But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. (Matthew 13:16-17)
I sincerely pray you are blessed by what I humbly believe God has given me to write here – all for His glory.
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
